Not at me. To me. He used both his hands. He laughed at his own bad joke about pension funds. He did the bit where he leans forward and says “and here’s where it gets weird,” and it actually got weird. It was good. It was the best version of him I’d seen all month.

Then he went home and tried to write a 200 word LinkedIn post about the same idea.

He spent two hours on it. He wrote four sentences. He deleted three. The remaining sentence read like the FAQ on a SaaS website.

He sent it to me with a note: “I think I’ve just lost the ability to write.”

Thanks for reading Sound Like You! None of you have.

You haven’t lost anything. You’ve been told for 25 years that “writing” means a specific shape. The shape has rules. The rules say: no contractions, no opinions in the first paragraph, no jokes near the headline, no admitting you don’t know something, no ending a sentence with the word “yet.”

So when you sit down to write a post, you reach for that shape automatically. The shape is what your last manager rewarded you for. The shape is what got you on the executive committee. The shape is the one you cannot turn off because you wrote a thousand versions of it before lunch every day for two decades.

The shape is fine. It works in a board pack. It does not work on the page when you’re trying to be a person.

This is the bit I want you to hear properly….

You don’t have a voice problem.

You have a container problem.

Your voice is the 11 minute coffee. The board-pack shape is the container you keep pouring it into. The voice is fine. The container is the wrong shape for the liquid. The result is what looks, sounds, and reads like beige. Not because you’re a bad writer. Because you’ve put a working voice into a container designed for a different job.

(I should know. I spent six months last year accidentally writing my own posts in a container shaped exactly like a corporate exec summary. I am supposed to be the person who knows about this. The container is sneaky. It comes for everyone.)

Thanks for reading Sound Like You! Out loud. Hand on heart. Did any of them sound like the version of you that explains your work over a flat white? If yes, brilliant, keep going, you’re already most of the way out. If no, you don’t need a writing course. You need a different container.

The new container has three traits. It is shorter than you think. It has a real opinion in it. It uses the specific noun rather than the category noun. Not “founders,” but “the founder I had coffee with on Thursday.” Not “the industry,” but “the four blokes I worked with at PwC who all said the same thing in 2019.” Specifics. Always specifics.

That’s the fix in a sentence. Stop trying to write better. Start putting the working voice into a container shaped like a person, not like a slide deck.

Next newsletter I’m going to name the seven specific reasons your existing content reads as a stranger. The structural ones. The ghostwriter ones. The “I filled in a brand questionnaire” ones. If you’ve ever opened your own LinkedIn and felt nothing, that’s the diagnostic.

For this weekend the work is smaller.

Find one paragraph from your last six months of content that you genuinely don’t recognise. Just one. Stick it in a doc. Underneath it, write what you’d actually say if you were explaining the same idea to a friend in a kitchen. Don’t post it. Don’t fix it. Just look at the gap.

That gap is the work. Everything I write here for the next ninety days is going to keep pointing at it.

Welcome back. Or welcome in. Either way.

Sarra, The Ghost 👻

If you want a second pair of eyes on the gap, I run a Voice Audit. One memo. One diagnostic. One path forward. → DM me for a flash audit.

#06 - I Don't Have a Voice. explaining how she was the only person at her company who could actually describe what they did to a customer without putting them to sleep.

“I don’t have a voice. I just talk.”

I wrote it down. It’s the most common sentence I hear in this work. 25+ years, hundreds of founders, dozens of execs and coaches. “I don’t have a voice.” Always said with the voice. Always while doing the thing they’ve decided they can’t do.

Let me say the obvious thing once so we never have to say it again.

You have a voice. You have, in fact, a very specific voice. I know because I just listened to you describe your customer for forty minutes without using the word “synergy” once.

What you don’t have is a writing voice that sounds like the people you admire on LinkedIn. That’s a different problem.

It’s also not the problem you think it is.

The thing nobody tells founders is that the voice they’re looking for is the voice they already use. The one that comes out at dinner. On a podcast. In a Slack message at 11pm to a co-founder you trust. The version that doesn’t get edited.

That voice isn’t missing. It’s been disqualified.

You disqualified it because:

It doesn’t sound like Naval.

It doesn’t sound like Justin Welsh.

It doesn’t sound “professional.”

It uses the word “knackered” instead of “fatigued.”

It says “the bit our customers hate” instead of “a primary friction point.”

It tells stories about your dog when you’re explaining your pricing model.

You have looked at your actual voice, decided it doesn’t qualify as A Voice, and then concluded that you don’t have one. That’s not a missing voice. That’s a rejected voice.

The rejection happens before you write a word. By the time you sit down to draft a post, you’ve already vetoed the version of you that would actually be interesting to read. What gets typed is whoever’s left after the veto.

That’s why the post sounds like a press release. That’s why you read it back and think that’s not me.

It isn’t you. You disqualified you.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Here’s the trick.

Open the voice memo app on your phone. Find the most recent recording you sent to yourself, a friend, or a co-founder. Anything. The one where you were thinking out loud about a problem, or rehearsing what you wanted to say to a customer, or just venting.

Listen to it.

Now read your last LinkedIn post.

Two voices. One is sharp, opinionated, occasionally rude, intermittently funny, full of specifics, fully recognisable as you. The other is “value-driven content” written by someone you’d cross the street to avoid at a conference.

The first voice is the one you’ve been telling yourself you don’t have.

You have it. You use it. You just don’t publish it.

So the question isn’t “how do I find my voice.” It’s “what made me decide my actual voice doesn’t count.”

For most founders the answer is some version of:

Fifteen years of being told to be more professional in meetings.

A boss who edited the colour out of your emails.

Someone in marketing who once “softened” a thing you wrote, and you let them.

A creator you admire who writes in a tone that isn’t yours, and now you think that tone is The Tone.

The voice was always there. The decision to disqualify it was learned. Anything that’s learned can be unlearned.

It just takes one decision to publish the unfiltered version once and see what happens.

The thing to do this week is small and specific.

Take the next post you’d ordinarily write for LinkedIn. Don’t write it.

Open your phone, hit record, and talk for three minutes about whatever the post was supposed to be about. Don’t structure it. Don’t introduce yourself. Don’t think about who’s listening.

Now transcribe it. Don’t clean it up.

Read the transcript twice. Find one sentence in there you’d never have written down on purpose.

Publish a post built around that sentence.

If it does worse than your usual posts, ignore everything in this newsletter and go back to whatever you were doing.

If it does better, you’ve just proven the thing I was trying to tell you.

You don’t have a voice problem. You had one all along.

You just talk.

Sarra The Ghost 👻

#05 - Your best post is always the one you almost didn't I Just Talk.”

It sat in my drafts for nine days. Twice I rewrote the opening to sound less rude. Once I deleted it entirely and started over. Once I considered shelving it because it felt too direct, too obvious, too “everyone already knows this.”

I published it on a Tuesday morning at 6:47am, before the rational part of my brain came online.

By that night it had done more inbound for The Ghost than three months of polished writing.

This is a pattern. Yours, too.

Every founder I work with has a folder of drafts they almost published. The thing the customer said. The opinion they were going to put on LinkedIn until they remembered they had clients. The post that started “Most people in my industry are wrong about X.” The post that started with a number that felt too specific to be safe.

Almost every one of those drafts is better than what they actually shipped that week.

The reason is simple, and it’s the reason this newsletter exists: the filter that stops you publishing the post is the same filter that strips the voice out of the post you do publish.

If you almost didn’t hit send, the post was probably good. If you hit send without flinching, the post was probably forgettable.

There’s a counter-intuitive rule in here. It’s not “publish whatever pisses you off.” It’s narrower than that.

The post you almost don’t publish is the right one when it has all three of these:

A specific moment, name, or number that you can defend. A real opinion that someone reasonable could disagree with. A cause-and-effect that explains why the moment matters.

That’s the same three things I named two weeks ago. Specific evidence. Real opinion. Named cause and effect.

If a draft has all three, the part of your brain that wants to delete it is doing exactly the wrong job. That brain is the freelancer who smooths your edges. The AI trained on the median. The internal editor rewarded for fifteen years of not being weird in public.

The brain saying “don’t post this” is the same brain that produced the average LinkedIn post you’re currently embarrassed by.

You should listen to it less.

I’m not going to tell you to “be brave.” That’s the kind of advice that makes me want to throw a laptop. Brave is not the move.

The move is operational.

Three things that genuinely fix this:

One. Write it, then take a 90-minute break before you read it again. The version of you that wrote it is the unfiltered one. The version of you reviewing it 90 minutes later is the filtered one. Whichever one wins the argument decides what gets published. Most of the time, the unfiltered version should win. You’ll know because the filtered version is always the one suggesting “softer” edits.

Two. Send the post to one person before you publish. Not a committee. Not your team. One person whose taste you trust, who isn’t paid by you, who’ll tell you the truth in one sentence. If they say “ship it,” ship. If they say “this isn’t you,” keep digging.

Three. Keep a graveyard. A folder of drafts you didn’t publish. Read it monthly. Notice the pattern. Most founders have a graveyard full of better posts than what made it to the feed. The graveyard is your evidence cabinet for what your unfiltered voice actually sounds like.

That’s it. No frameworks. No prompts. Three operational moves that override the filter.

The post I almost didn’t publish is the one bringing this newsletter the most subscribers.

Yours is in your drafts right now.

It’s the one with a specific number, a real opinion, and a cause and effect you’d rather not own in public. The one that names a person, a moment, or an industry. The one you’ve already half-deleted twice.

Hit send before the filter catches up.

That’s the work.

Sarra The Ghost 👻

If you want a second pair of eyes on the post in your drafts, that’s what a Voice Audit is

#04 - The Voice Memo Method.

How a four-minute recording becomes a 178-word post that doesn't sound like AI wrote it. By Friday she had a LinkedIn post with 80 reposts, three inbound enquiries, and one comment that read “this is the first thing I’ve read this year that didn’t feel like AI wrote it.”

The memo was 4 minutes 12 seconds. The post was 178 words. The work between memo and post was 25 minutes of mine.

The system below is what I did in those 25 minutes. I run it with every new client. I run it on myself every Sunday. It’s the full playbook. Four steps. Repeatable. AI-optional. The whole thing fits on a postcard.

I call it the Voice Memo Method. You don’t need to call it anything. You just need to run it.

Step 1 · The Memo

You don’t sit down to “record content.” You sit down to record what’s actually in your head right now.

The prompt is one of three:

What’s something at work this week that pissed you off, made you laugh, or made you change your mind?

What’s something you said to a customer or colleague in the last 48 hours that surprised them?

What’s the thing about your industry that you’d say at a dinner party but never put on LinkedIn?

Hit record. Talk for four minutes. Don’t structure it. Don’t introduce yourself. Don’t pre-write. Specifically: don’t think about who’s listening.

The reason this works is the filter framework from two weeks ago. Three filters strip the voice out at the translation layer. The voice memo sits upstream of the filters. You haven’t started translating yet.

If you stop and start, restart. You’re allowed three takes. After three, ship whatever you’ve got. The third take is usually the truest one anyway.

Step 2 · The Transcript

Run the memo through any decent transcription tool. Whisper. Otter. Wispr Flow. The native iPhone transcript will do. Doesn’t matter which.

What you get back is messy. False starts, “um”, repeated half-sentences, the moment you went off on a tangent and came back. Don’t clean it up. Read it twice.

You’re looking for two things, both of which will jump off the page if you’re paying attention:

The sentence you said with energy that you’d never write down on purpose.

The cause and effect you snuck in without realising.

Mark them. That’s the surgery.

If nothing jumps, the memo prompt was too soft. Re-record with the harder version. The third one in the list above is the most reliable for surfacing real material because the dinner-party frame removes the LinkedIn brain.

Step 3 · The Spine

Every post that lands has one cause and effect sentence. Not a hook. Not an opinion. Cause and effect.

Cause: the freelancer smoothed your edges.
Effect: your sentence is now generic.

Cause: the AI tool was trained on the median.
Effect: it can only give you the median back.

Cause: you’ve been rewarded for not being weird in public for fifteen years.
Effect: you self-translate before you even open the doc.

Look at your transcript again. Find the cause and effect that’s already there. Almost always it’s one sentence you said quickly, possibly under your breath, possibly as an aside. Not the obvious “main point.” The thing you said in passing because it felt obvious to you.

That sentence is the spine of the post. Everything else hangs off it.

If you can’t find one, the post isn’t ready. Two outcomes from here. Re-record with a more specific prompt. Or shelve and move on. Don’t force a spine that isn’t there. Forced spines make forgettable posts.

Step 4 · The Rewrite

Now you write the post.

The rule: every sentence either supports the spine or earns its own cause and effect.

What gets cut:

Hedging phrases (”I think”, “in my view”, “personally”)

Throat-clearing openers (”So I’ve been thinking about…”)

Generic transitions (”here’s the thing”, “let’s dive in”)

Anything you wrote because you thought it sounded “professional”

What stays:

The specific number, name, or moment

The opinion someone could disagree with

The cause and effect

Order matters more than people think. The spine sits at the bottom of the post, not the top. The hook is whatever sentence is most likely to make a stranger keep reading. The middle is the proof. The end is the spine, restated cleanly. Posts read like an argument with the punchline in the right place. Punchline first kills the post.

For the founder I worked with last Wednesday, the spine was: most of our customers don’t care about the platform; they care that we took the part they hated and made it boring.

Hook (top of post): “Most of our customers don’t care about our product.”

Middle: three sentences of context, one specific customer story, one number.

End: the spine, restated. “They care that we took the part they hated and made it boring. That’s what we sell.”

178 words. 80 reposts. 25 minutes of work.

Why this works when “write better hooks” doesn’t

Most founders try to write better LinkedIn posts. That’s the wrong framing. You can’t write your way out of a translation problem. The translation problem is upstream of the writing.

What you can do is move further upstream than the post. Record before you translate. Find the spine in the recording. Cut the filter. Ship.

The Voice Memo Method is one of five extraction systems I run with paying clients. Next month’s paid post unpacks the second one, the system I use when the client doesn’t have time to record memos but has 90 minutes a week of internal Slack messages and Loom videos. Different surface, same principle.

For now, run this on the next thing you’d ordinarily ghostwrite to yourself. Then send it. See what happens.

That’s the work.

Sarra The Ghost

If you want me to run this on a memo you record, that’s what a Voice Audit is.
DM me for deets.

#03 - The three sentences your ghostwriter keeps deleting that are actually your voice.

And why they're Three patterns, repeated.

If you’ve ever worked with a ghostwriter, an editor, or a “content strategist,” you’ve watched them quietly remove these from your drafts. Not because they’re bad. Because they’re risky. And risk gets feedback, and feedback is what people get fired for.

Here are the three:

One: the sentence with a real opinion in it.

The one that goes “most founders are wrong about X.” Or “I’ve stopped doing Y.” Or “the standard advice on Z is, structurally, a way to avoid getting better.”

Editors smooth this into “many leaders consider Y” or “there are different perspectives on Z.” That’s not editing. That’s neutering. The sentence with the real opinion is the only one anyone disagrees with, and disagreement is the only signal the algorithm reads as a real conversation.

You don’t go viral by being agreeable. You go viral by being correct about something other people are quietly wrong about, in public, with your name on it.

Two: the sentence with the specific number, name, or moment.

“Last Tuesday a founder sent me a four-minute voice memo.” That’s a sentence. “Founders often communicate informally with me” is not.

The first one is true. The second one is a category. Categories don’t move. Specifics do.

Editors hate specifics because specifics can be checked. Checked sentences are scary. Vague sentences are safe. Vague sentences also do nothing.

The algorithm rewards specifics for the same reason humans do. Specifics are evidence. Evidence is the difference between a thought and a claim.

Three: the sentence that names the cause-and-effect.

“Your LinkedIn sounds like LinkedIn because your prompt was trained on LinkedIn.” Cause. Effect.

“There’s a complex set of factors influencing AI-generated content quality.” That’s the same sentence after it’s been put through three editors and a brand committee. It says nothing. It’s also impossible to disagree with, which means it’s also impossible to remember.

Cause-and-effect is what makes a post quotable. Quotable is what makes you the person they think of in a room you’re not in.

Three sentences. Real opinion. Specific evidence. Named cause-and-effect.

If you read your last five LinkedIn posts and count how many of those three you actually shipped, you’ll find your translation problem in two minutes.

Most founders are running about one hit per ten posts. The hit is always the post where the filter slipped. The filter slipped because something pissed you off, or made you laugh, or made you change your mind, and you wrote it before the editor in your head caught up.

The work is making the unfiltered version the default, not the accident.

That’s what this newsletter is for.

Sarra | The Ghost

The system I use to keep these three patterns in client work lives inside HauntOS my Skool community.

#02 - You don't have a voice problem. tired of pretending the thing we built is exciting when what’s actually exciting is that we built it without losing our minds. Most of our customers don’t care about the platform. They care that someone finally took the part they hated and made it boring.

That’s a banger. That’s a post. That’s the thing the algorithm rewards because it sounds like a person.

Forty minutes later, she sent me her draft of the same idea for LinkedIn. It started with: In today’s fast-paced market, founders face increasing pressure to differentiate.

Same brain. Same Wednesday. Same human.
Different voice.

This is the gap.

Most founders don’t have a voice problem. The voice is fine. The voice is, in fact, the asset. You can hear it on a podcast. You can hear it in the boardroom. You can hear it when someone asks you a question you actually care about.

You have a translation problem.

Somewhere between “the thing I’d actually say” and “the thing I’d publish,” your sentences pass through a filter. The filter strips out three things every time:

The opinion that might lose you a customer. The cause-and-effect you didn’t soften. The specific number, name, or moment that proves you weren’t making it up.

What’s left is a sentence that could have been written by anyone in your category, about any product, on any Wednesday. Generic on arrival. Forgettable by Friday.

The filter has a name. Three of them, actually.

One: a freelancer who’s smoothing your edges because their job is to not get fired. Sharp opinions get feedback. Smoothed sentences don’t. So they smooth. You read it back, recognise nothing, and post it anyway because the deadline’s now.

Two: an AI tool that was trained on the median LinkedIn post. It cannot, structurally, give you anything that doesn’t sound like the median. That’s what models do. You ask for “professional,” it gives you “professional,” which is a synonym for “unrecognisable.”

Three: your own internal editor, the one that’s been rewarded for not being weird in public for the last fifteen years of your career. This one’s the worst. You self-translate before you even open the doc.

Three filters. One blanded sentence. Repeat 200 times a year.

The thing nobody tells you is that the fix isn’t a better hook framework or a swipe file or a more aggressive prompt. The fix is removing the filter. Or, more precisely, learning which version of yourself the filter was protecting you from, and shipping that version anyway.

The voice memo is the version the filter doesn’t reach. That’s why it’s sharper. You weren’t translating yet. You were just talking.

Here’s the thing to do this week.

Record a four-minute voice memo about something at work that pissed you off, made you laugh, or made you change your mind. Don’t transcribe it. Don’t clean it up. Just listen to it back.

Then read your last three LinkedIn posts.

The gap between those two voices is your translation problem. That gap is what every essay in this newsletter is going to keep pointing at. Sometimes I’ll show you how to close it yourself. Sometimes I’ll do it for paying clients and let you watch.

Either way: the voice was always there.

Nobody extracted it.

That’s the work.

Sarra | The Ghost

If you want me to listen to the memo and tell you exactly where the signal disappears, that’s what a Voice Audit is. One memo. One diagnostic. One path forward.

DM me to find out more.

#01 - I went quiet. Thursday. Saturday. Three columns, three angles, three different muscles. I called the whole thing HauntOS. I meant it.

I shipped about a third of what I promised.

Here’s the part nobody writes about. The reason I went quiet wasn’t that I ran out of ideas. It was that I noticed something I didn’t want to be true.

The newsletter was pulling in the wrong room.

Half my posts were aimed at other ghostwriters. The AI debate. The 40 clients problem. The stat everyone’s using to scare people in my industry. Sharp posts. Wrong audience.

You’re not here for that.

You’re a founder. You sound nothing like your LinkedIn. You’ve got a voice memo on your phone right now that’s better than anything you’ve published in six months. And every time you sit down to write, the version that comes out reads like the algorithm wrote it.

That’s the problem worth solving. Not which AI tool ate the freelancer’s lunch.

So three things change from Tuesday:

One. The cadence is honest now. At least one essay a week. Tuesdays. Free or paid, never both. I’d rather hit once than miss three times. You’re a voice expert. The fastest way to lose credibility is to publish on a schedule you don’t keep.

Two. The audience is named. Founders, execs, coaches, and consultants who refuse to sound like the LinkedIn algorithm wrote them. If you’re a fellow ghostwriter reading this, hi, you’re welcome here, but the work is pointed at the people you write for.

Three. The strongest essays I’ve already written are now free, permanently. The ones that diagnose what’s actually happening to your voice between the memo and the post. Pillar work. Top of funnel. The stuff I’d hand a stranger before anything else.

Start with this one: → I Don’t Have a Voice. I Just Talk.

It’s the post I’d want a founder to read first.

Next Tuesday I’m publishing the new pillar. You don’t have a voice problem. You have a translation problem. It’s the diagnosis the rest of the newsletter is going to keep coming back to.

See you then.

Sarra | The Ghost

If your content reads flat and you want a second pair of eyes, I run a Voice Audit.
One DM, One voice memo. One diagnostic. One path forward.
